Spatial patterns and drivers of soil total nitrogen in anthropogenic shrub encroachment in desert steppe

چکیده

Nitrogen is the most important driving factor in primary production and decomposition arid semi-arid ecosystems. The effects of shrub encroachment on nitrogen cycling have been investigated at site scale but seldomly conducted landscape scale. Here, we selected 43 shrubland sites distributing across 3000 km 2 area temperate desert grassland eastern Yanchi County Ningxia Hui Autonomous. We spatial heterogeneity factors soil total (STN) by using geostatistical analysis geographical detector method. Our results showed that average decreased order 0–5 cm (0.21 g kg −1 ) > 5–15 (0.19 15–40 (0.18 ). Geostatistical exhibited strong autocorrelation layers moderate layer. Furthermore, geographic method indicated physicochemical properties stronger than these topographic vegetation biomass determining distribution nitrogen. Specifically, water content 0–20 layer explained 35% variation pattern layer, while organic carbon 64% 45% patterns layers, respectively. It was concluded primarily drove formation scale, indicating anthropogenic evidently affected redistribution dryland.

Climatic/edaphic controls on soil carbon/nitrogen response to shrub encroachment in desert grassland.

The proliferation of woody plants in grasslands over the past 100+ years can alter carbon, nitrogen, and water cycles and influence land surface-atmosphere interactions. Although the majority of organic carbon in these ecosystems resides belowground, there is no consensus on how this change in land cover has affected soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) pools. The degree to which d...

Quantifying soil surface change in degraded drylands: Shrub encroachment and effects of fire and vegetation removal in a desert grassland

[1] Woody plant encroachment, a worldwide phenomenon, is a major driver of land degradation in desert grasslands. Woody plant encroachment by shrub functional types ultimately leads to the formation of a patchy landscape with fertile shrub patches interspaced with nutrient-depleted bare soil patches. This is considered to be an irreversible process of land and soil degradation. Recent studies h...

Effects of Shrub Canopy on the Microclimate and Soil Properties of Steppe Rangeland

In arid and semi-arid ecosystems, shrubs may act as fertility islands but theireffect may vary depending on their morphology and ecological impacts. This research wasaimed to study effect of three shrubs Scariola orientalis, Astragalus heratensis, and Rosapersica on soil properties and on the microclimate conditions (temperature, luminance, andsoil moisture) of their understory in the steppe ra...
